Born and raised in Church Hill, Tennessee, Tanner Combs was a 2015 graduate of Volunteer High School. From an early age, he demonstrated a natural gift for leadership, a love for athletics, and a genuine desire to uplift others. His path in life was guided by a mission to mentor and inspire.
Tanner went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in coaching and physical fitness and a master’s degree in strength and conditioning from East Tennessee State University (ETSU). These academic achievements fueled a career centered around physical education, sports performance, and youth development.
Coaching and Teaching in Kingsport City Schools
At the time of his passing, Tanner was making a lasting impact in Kingsport City Schools. He served as an assistant football and basketball coach at Robinson Middle School, while also working as an assistant sports performance coach at Dobyns-Bennett High School. In addition to his coaching roles, he taught college and career readiness at Robinson, bringing his signature energy and compassion into the classroom.
Colleagues recall Tanner’s contagious enthusiasm, strong moral compass, and ability to connect deeply with students.
