Fort Lauderdale, FL — What began as a joyful Father’s Day turned into an unimaginable tragedy when 33-year-old Antwon Wilson of Lauderhill lost his life while heroically saving his daughter from drowning off Fort Lauderdale Beach. The heartbreaking incident occurred near the B Ocean Resort on Sunday evening, just after lifeguards had ended their shift, leaving the community reeling in grief and awe of Antwon’s final act of love and courage.

According to Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue (FLFR), emergency teams were dispatched to Seabreeze Boulevard around 7:20 p.m. following several 911 calls reporting swimmers in distress. Antwon’s daughter and another child had been caught in a strong current. Without hesitation, Antwon dove into the water to rescue them, ultimately giving his life to save his child.
“He was in the water with several family members,” said FLFR Battalion Chief Danny Moran. “When he noticed the children struggling, he immediately sprang into action. He helped get his daughter to safety before he went under.”
Witnesses described the heartbreaking scene as Antwon struggled against the powerful waves to keep his daughter afloat. Despite his valiant efforts, he was overtaken by the current shortly after ensuring she was safe.
Although lifeguard duty had officially ended 20 minutes prior, several lifeguards were still on-site wrapping up for the day. When they were alerted to the emergency, they responded immediately. Their swift actions, combined with the bravery of a bystander who also jumped into the water, helped save both children.
“A good Samaritan entered the surf to help but was nearly pulled under as well,” said Lt. Moran. “Thankfully, he made it back to shore.”
Lifeguards managed to pull Antwon’s daughter from the water, but by then, Antwon had disappeared beneath the waves. A frantic search followed, involving lifeguards, firefighters, and emergency responders. He was eventually located and brought to shore, where CPR was administered before he was transported to Broward Health Medical Center. Despite valiant efforts by medical staff, Antwon was later pronounced dead. His daughter and the good Samaritan survived and are expected to make full physical recoveries.
