According to Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue (FLFR), emergency teams were dispatched to Seabreeze Boulevard around 7:20 p.m. following several 911 calls reporting swimmers in distress. Antwon’s daughter and another child had been caught in a strong current. Without hesitation, Antwon dove into the water to rescue them, ultimately giving his life to save his child.

“He was in the water with several family members,” said FLFR Battalion Chief Danny Moran. “When he noticed the children struggling, he immediately sprang into action. He helped get his daughter to safety before he went under.”

Witnesses described the heartbreaking scene as Antwon struggled against the powerful waves to keep his daughter afloat. Despite his valiant efforts, he was overtaken by the current shortly after ensuring she was safe.

Although lifeguard duty had officially ended 20 minutes prior, several lifeguards were still on-site wrapping up for the day. When they were alerted to the emergency, they responded immediately. Their swift actions, combined with the bravery of a bystander who also jumped into the water, helped save both children.

“A good Samaritan entered the surf to help but was nearly pulled under as well,” said Lt. Moran. “Thankfully, he made it back to shore.”

Lifeguards managed to pull Antwon’s daughter from the water, but by then, Antwon had disappeared beneath the waves. A frantic search followed, involving lifeguards, firefighters, and emergency responders. He was eventually located and brought to shore, where CPR was administered before he was transported to Broward Health Medical Center. Despite valiant efforts by medical staff, Antwon was later pronounced dead. His daughter and the good Samaritan survived and are expected to make full physical recoveries.

A Community in Mourning

Antwon Wilson’s death has devastated his family and the Lauderhill community. A devoted father and active community member, Antwon was known for volunteering his time to youth sports and local events. Friends remember him as a warm, dependable man whose greatest joy came from spending time with his children.

“He died doing what any real father would do — protecting his child,” said close friend Tiana Moore. “Antwon was already a hero to us. Now, the world knows what we knew all along.”

Social media has been filled with heartfelt tributes. Friends, neighbors, and even strangers have shared their condolences, stories, and admiration for Antwon’s courage and devotion to his family. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help support funeral costs and provide for his children’s future, ensuring that his legacy of love and selflessness lives on.

A candlelight vigil is being planned in Lauderhill to honor Antwon’s life. “This is the essence of fatherhood,” said Pastor Jerome Brooks of a local church. “What Antwon did was the purest form of love. He gave everything for his child. That kind of sacrifice deserves to be remembered.”

A Powerful Reminder

This tragedy also serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers of swimming in the ocean after lifeguard hours. Despite appearing calm, ocean waters can hide powerful rip currents and unpredictable conditions. Authorities have since urged the public to heed all safety warnings, only swim in designated areas, and remain vigilant, especially when children are involved.

Though Antwon’s life ended far too soon, his final moments embodied the very meaning of fatherhood. On a day meant to honor dads, Antwon lived — and died — in the most heroic way possible: by putting his child’s life before his own.

His daughter will grow up knowing her father’s last act was one of pure love and bravery. His courage and legacy will continue to inspire everyone who hears his story.

Rest in peace, Antwon Wilson.
