Authorities have confirmed that 33-year-old Nicholas Olson-Hartley fatally shot his wife, 27-year-old Katie Olson-Hartley, and their two children before turning the gun on himself in what police are calling a domestic violence-related murder-suicide.
Police Respond to Mental Health Call on Mother’s Day
The Kalispell Police Department (KPD) responded to a call at 127 Werner Peak Trail at approximately 5:52 a.m. on Sunday, May 11. The 911 call was placed by Nicholas Olson-Hartley himself, who reportedly made alarming statements about his mental state before abruptly disconnecting.
When officers arrived, they were unable to make contact with anyone inside the home. After noting concerning signs at the scene, police made a forced entry.
Inside the residence, officers discovered the bodies of Nicholas and Katie Olson-Hartley, both dead from apparent gunshot wounds. Tragically, the couple’s two children—a six-year-old daughter and a seven-month-old infant—were also found deceased, also from gunshot wounds.
Investigators believe Nicholas committed the murders shortly before placing the 911 call, then died by suicide shortly thereafter.
